What is a professional coach?

When I’m asked, “What do you do”? I respond by saying that I am a professional coach. When I see a puzzled look, I follow up with, “I’m a personal and executive coach”. Then, I’m asked, "What is that? What do you do?".

Here’s a little bit of history of coaching…

Professional coaches have been around for well over 25 years. Circa 1998, the International Coach Federation (ICF) was formed. The ICF is the largest worldwide coaching organization. It sets the standards for the coaching profession.

Here’s the ICF definition of coaching…

The ICF defines coaching “as partnering with clients in a thought-provoking and creative process that inspires them to maximize their personal and professional potential, which is particularly important in today’s uncertain and complex environment. Coaches honor the client as the expert in his or her life and work and believe every client is creative, resourceful and whole. Standing on this foundation, the coach's responsibility is to:

  • Discover, clarify, and align with what the client wants to achieve

  • Encourage client self-discovery

  • Elicit client-generated solutions and strategies

  • Hold the client responsible and accountable

This process helps clients dramatically improve their outlook on work and life, while improving their leadership skills and unlocking their potential”.

Here’s what I do…

The short and sweet of it is… I help people change. If you are unhappy, together, we will turn that around. If you’re stuck, I will help you move forward. If you are overwhelmed, we will create a plan for relief. If you need work life balance, we will discover it together. I am your support system, your advocate, and your coach.
